Today marks exactly one year until Wollongong hosts the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals, with preparations well underway to welcome the world’s top triathletes to Australia. The event, set to take place from the 15th to the 19th October 2025, will be a milestone in Wollongong’s proud sporting history, showcasing the region’s natural beauty and sporting prowess on the global stage.
The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals will feature 13 races over four days, including elite, under 23, junior, para triathlon and age groups events. In addition, the schedule will include a community triathlon, giving the expected 6,700 participants from over 43 countries the chance to experience the excitement of a world-class event.
Destination NSW and Wollongong City Council have joined forces as key partners and stakeholders, ensuring the event delivers economic, social, and environmental benefits to the region. This collaborative effort highlights the significance of the event not only as a sporting spectacle but also as a boost to tourism and the local economy.
In addition to the 6,700-strong global contingency of triathletes will be an expected crowd in excess of 15,000 supporters and spectators lining the stunning Wollongong foreshore, reaffirming Wollongong’s position as an iconic sporting destination to a worldwide audience.
The city’s commitment to hosting world-class sporting events is further exemplified by Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown’s enthusiastic support for the upcoming Championship Finals.
“Many in our community will be familiar with triathlon events that are a regular fixture on the city’s sporting calendar. The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals is what people are familiar with, just on a far grander scale,’’ Councillor Brown said.
“As a city, Wollongong has the skills and know-how of supporting the delivery of an international sporting event, plus the ever-energetic and enthusiastic locals who will be keen to watch the world’s top triathletes swim, ride and run portions of our picturesque coastline.
“It’s going to be a great four-day event for all involved and once again cements Wollongong’s reputation on the international stage as a go-to destination for sports, leisure and relaxation.”
AusTriathlon Chief Executive Officer Tim Harradine marked the milestone by acknowledging the event’s impact on both the sport and the host city.
“We’re excited to see Wollongong welcome the world once again, this time for the pinnacle of our sport—the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals,” Harradine said
“The event will bring together the best athletes on the planet all competing on the breathtaking backdrop of Australia’s iconic South Coast.

The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals aims to leave a lasting legacy for Wollongong and the triathlon community. Organisers are committed to sustainability and have initiatives in place to reduce the event’s environmental impact such as the use of eco-friendly materials and minimising single-use plastics. With a well-established public transport network, including the free Gong Shuttle bus, that links passengers to the Wollongong foreshore area, using public transport will be easy for event attendees.

As the countdown to the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals begins, Wollongong is preparing to deliver an unforgettable experience for athletes and fans alike.
Highlighting the importance of the event, World Triathlon President and IOC Member Marisol Casado shared her delight at bringing the Championship Finals back to Australia.
“The Championship Finals are the crown jewel of the World Triathlon calendar and we are thrilled to bring the World Triathlon Championship Finals back to Australia in 2025, a destination that has a strong history of hosting World Triathlon events at the highest level,’ Casado said.
“The event will be staged from the 15th to the 19th of October 2025 in Wollongong, New South Wales and will highlight the world class, multisport location, to the global audience.
“The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals will crown World champions across Elite, U23, Junior, Para Triathlon and Age-Group events. There is great excitement as we approach the one year to go milestone.”
